As you are likely aware, during the State election VicForests was subject to a court decision preventing it from harvesting timber in areas that your government had previously allocated them to produce timber from.
The result is that Victorian sawmills, pallet makers and Australian Paper, the largest private sector employer in the Latrobe Valley, has run out of hardwood.
Many workers have been stood down for months already a thousands more Victorian workers , their families and their communities are facing a tough Christmas and a bleak future.
This crisis has been brewing for over 18 months and we need real solutions, not the “non-solutions” that have been presented in the past by your Government in response to our warnings of the collapse of the industry .
We are calling for you to:
- Identify viable short, medium and long-term solutions to resume harvesting work for forest contractors and their crews and hardwood log supply for Victorian sawmills, pallet and paper manufacturers.
- Properly fix the legal loopholes that have allowed anti-jobs green groups to shut down our industry
Your urgent action is required.
